Place Two Photos Side by Side in Blogger

I got asked this question during the #bbloggers chat a couple of Sundays ago by the lovely Kelly, I've done some research and found a way to place two photos, side by side in a blog post. Obviously, this works best if your photos are the same size but I think it would be great for portrait photos, it also needs to be hosted by a different site but you should really do that anyways because blogger limits your image uploads. Anyways, onto the tutorial...

When you create a post, you will see two tabs, compose & html. You will need to click into html and paste the following code

Change these to your image link which is hosted on photobucket, shutterfly, tinypic, flickr, etc.

Once this is done, you can then click on compose and continue writing your post around the photos. I recommend adding the photos first because unless you are familiar with HTML, you will probably be confused about where to place it once you have written the post.

If this doesn't work you may need to define the width of the images (make sure that both image widths added together are LESS than the post width! - you can find this information by looking for main post/body/content width in the #main-wrapper in your html code*.)

* It may be under #main or .post-body, depending on your template. You are looking for the width of the area where posts appear (the main/post/body/content area). You can also find this by looking for the width in Template Designer like below, taking into account margins, you can calculate the post body width.

From the image above, I know that my post width is about 870px (210px + margins + post width = 1100px). If I post 2 images side by side, I would have them be around 400px in width or 1 image of about 800px in width. If you can't find it, just estimate. You will know when you preview the post how big the images can be in width.

Use Time Machine to Backup your Apple Mac

System Preferences > Time Machine > Pick you External Hard drive

Why Use Time Machine?

• it keeps hourly backups for the past 24hours
• daily backups for the past month
• weekly backups for all previous months

• the oldest backups are deleted when disk becomes full

Great way to make sure everything is saved externally incase anything every happens and the best part is, its automatic once you hard drive is plugged in so you don't have to worry about it. If anything happens, everything is stored to then restore your computer. You can see below all the backups that you can scroll back into to find something (photo, document, music, file, etc)

Automate Watermarking/Resizing & Other Edits using Actions

Today's tutorial is how to use actions in Photoshop (& alternative programs) to automatically add a watermark/text and batch save photos, it saves so much time when editing multiple images if it is set up right. If you are using Corel Paint Shop Pro, it is the same technique but instead of actions, it is called scripts. I'm sure most programs have something similar so have a look around.

Preparing the Program

Open an image. Click Window > Actions(1). The Actions window will open, click the folder(2) and give it a name. Then click the new action layer(3). Name your action "watermark" or "resize". Click Record(4) when you're ready to start. From this point on, only do what you want to be recorded!!!! So resize the image, create an edit, add text...whatever it is you want to automate. I'm going to go through resizing & watermarking the image, but you can pretty much do anything.

Resize Image Action

This may look complicated but trust me, it isn't. Open an Image. Click Record in the Actions Window > Image > Image Size... > Change the Width & Height to whatever you want > Ok > File > Save > Stop the Recording in the Actions Window.

Create a Watermark Action

Open Image. Click Record in the Actions Window. You may see the image has a lock beside it in the layers panel, if it does double click on it to unlock it and it will become a layer instead of a background.

Add new layer. Click the text button and add your text/watermark.

Selecting both layers, we are now going to align it. I want mine in the bottom right hand corner so click Layer > Align > Bottom Edges. Layer > Align > Right Edges. You can use the align option or just move it to where you want.

File > Save > Stop the Recording in the Actions Window. You will see all the actions you have performed in the actions window.

Using Actions to Batch Edit

Click File > Automate > Batch > Choose the settings below.

Set = The folder name where your action is.

Action = The recorded action you want to use - choose watermark (or whatever you named your recording).

Source = Where your pictures that you want to edit are.

Destination = Where you wish to save the images.

File Naming = Choose the way you want it saved.

Easily Follow Blogs with iReader

iReader is a great way to read RSS updates on your Mac. What I love about this is that you can sync it with Google Reader, therefore you can get all your blogger/GFC subscriptions as well as other websites! There's a management system so you can organise your subscriptions into folders, you can sync with iCloud, favourite articles, customise keyboard shortcuts for faster reading. Another fab thing is it supports offline reading and it's very easily laid out. If you follow blogs via RSS Feed, this App may be your new best friend.

The left had column shows what you are subscribed to, when you click on one, the posts update in the middle column, you can flick through or use the search bar and when you select one the post appears in the last column so you can read it. You can pin certain posts/articles and then select to only show those pinned. View all unread posts makes it easy to see what you missed and you can easily share posts you enjoyed from the services menu. Available to download from the App Store.

Easily Resize your Blog Images with ResizeIt

ResizeIt allows you to easily change the size of multiple images and convert to a different format. This quick and easy tool is perfect for bloggers, think of the amount of photos you edit on a weekly basis.

Launch the App, pick your photos and simply choose your resize options. You can use it with your Macs Autometer to automatically resize images, instructions for this is in the manual of the App. Some people have complained about the new update, but I haven't noticed a difference. I think it's something to try anyways, if you like to have your images a certain size but hate spending time editing each one. I'd recommend giving it a go. ResizeIt is available for Macs on the App Store.

Change Blog Width Beyond 1000px

Todays tutorial is the answer to a question I've seen around a lot. How to change the width of your entire blog past the max allowed by the new blogger template designer. It's really simple.

The new blogger template designer has made it really easy to adjust the layout of your blog without having to mess with html, all you have to do is sign into Dashboard, click Design > Template Designer > Adjust Widths.

But the max blog width allowed is 1000px wide. Alter it how you like and click Apply to Blog to save. However, if you wish to change it more than this, Click Back to Blogger > Design > Edit HTML.

Note

When changing the width, keep in mind that people visiting your blog are using different computers and browsers, of all different sizes. You may want to check your blog on a few different browsers and computer screen sizes to make sure it looks ok.

First thing first, click Download Full Template. This is for backup, incase something goes wrong. It is always a good idea to backup your design before altering anything.

More than 1000px

Search for <b:template-skin>

If you press CTRL & F (Or CMD & F on MAC) on your keyboard you can search for this term.

You'l see something similar to the following

<b:variable default='0' name='main.column.left.width' type='length' value='0px'/>

<b:variable default='360px' name='main.column.right.width' type='length' value='260px'/>

To change the overall width, change 1000px and to alter your sidebar change whats in green. There you have it, a wider blog layout.

Add LinkWithin to Blog

LinkWithin is a realy handy widget to have installed on your blog. It shows stories (previous posts) at the end of each blog post that you publish. This helps to navigate people around your blog, making them stay longer. When they finish reading your newest post, they might see something interesting and click on it to read. Setting up LinkWithin is really easy and almost automatic.

First thing you need to do is head over to LinkWithin here, Fill in your details in the box that appears and follow the online instructions (click "Instal Widget" in point 1). After selecting your blog, it will ask you to name & save ("Add Widget").

Usually, it will appear on the top of your sidebar, either right or left. Move it to under your blog posts gadget, like I show in the following photos.

Now you will see something similar to this image beneath each post. They tend to be similar topics. Make sure to use an image in your blog posts, as this will catch the readers attention.
